Joe E. Ross, President and CEO of Reach University and the National Center for the Apprenticeship Degree, joined the Work Forces Podcast to discuss how Reach is reimagining higher education with its Apprenticeship Degree model. Unlike traditional degree programs, learners start in a paid job and transform that job into a degree, earning credit for work-based learning while gaining real-world experience. Ross frames the model around three ABCs: Affordability with no student loan debt for learners, Based in the Workplace from day one through graduation, and Credit for Work that leads to a meaningful credential and an integrated work and college experience.

This B2B2C approach engages employers at the front end, allowing them to bring employees into degree programs while addressing labor shortages. By embedding learning in the workplace, apprentices graduate with both a degree and years of practical experience, reducing onboarding time and creating a workforce ready to contribute from day one.

Since launching in 2020, Reach has grown from 67 learners to over 3,300 across eight states, with Pell-eligible students achieving a 70% graduation rate — far above the typical 40–50%. Ross also highlighted NCAD’s work with 50 institutions nationwide, showing how Apprenticeship Degrees can scale to meet workforce needs while providing accessible, career-aligned education for adults “hiding in plain sight.”

For those interested in getting involved, Ross offers practical guidance for institutions, employers, and policymakers to adopt and expand Apprenticeship Degree programs, emphasizing the potential to reshape workforce development at scale.

Hosted by Julian Alssid and Kaitlin LeMoine, the Work Forces Podcast spotlights innovators who are shaping the future of work and learning.
